Lamp-lit inn with a serene hot spring

Aoni Spa
Kuroishi City
Aoni Spa, an inn with a rustic appearance along the Aoni mountain stream, was developed by the poet, Yogaku Niwa, in 1928. The spa can be found when one goes deep into mountains away from Niji Lake, which has a dam between the mountains in Kuroishi City. This wooden inn deep in the mountains has thick beams and well-polished wooden panels, giving a simple, warm appearance. The inn is also known nationwide for its incandescent lamps. At dusk, these incandescent lamps are hung in the main building, the open-air bath, the detached bath and the indoor bath, creating an illusory atmosphere. While guests dine in the hall, lamps are brought to each guestroom and delight guests on their return. The yellow lights envelop the whole building so that guests can enjoy the pastoral atmosphere to the full. There are four indoor and open-air baths. An open-air bath with a thatched roof and the "Ryujin-noyu," which is like a small arbor are used for mixed bathing. In the main building, there are separate baths made of Japanese cypress for men and women. The inn is also open in wintertime but cannot be accessed by cars because of the deep snow. Therefore snowmobiles are used for the distance of six kilometers, where roads are impassable, to pick up guests. On the way there in a vast snowy field, guests are taught how to drive a snowmobile. How about learning to drive one? For some people, it takes several hours to get to the inn on foot using crampons on their snowshoes or by skiing.
