Visitors can enjoy various experiences peculiar
to Aomori that is famous for its apples like
picking and eating apples, pollinating and
covering apples with bags on an apple farm.

Koginsashi is characterized by the geometric
quilted patterns of white cotton threads
on indigo-blue cloth. It originated from
"Sashiko," once used to strengthen
the linen of farmer's working clothes by
quilting with cotton threads.

The performance of unique Tsugaru traditional
folksongs accompanied by a shamisen with
a wide neck is marvelous.

The forest of Japanese cypresses in Aomori
is one of the three most beautiful forests
in Japan. Japanese cypresses in Aomori are
used for such products that utilize their
antibacterial properties as health sandals,
wooden clogs and cutting boards in addition
to architectural materials. |

There are 40 or more processes to applying
a coat of lacquer and grinding. Lacquerware
is a real gem with various colors like vermilion,
blue, black and green. |

A joint concert is held with shamisen players
from all over the country, regardless of
the type of school, at the foot of Mt. Iwaki
- the symbol of Tsugaru. |

Aomori produces more apples than any other
place in Japan, and their apples, grown in
this northern part of the country, taste
best. Processed food like apple juice and
jam are also popular.

Kenoshiru is soup with diced ingredients
seasoned with miso. People around the Tsugaru
area enjoy love to eat it, especially in
mid January. |

Jyappajiru is a typical Aomori wintertime
hot pot made with codfish seasoned with miso
and cooked at the table.

Big scallop shells are filled with fish,
shellfish and vegetables, then eggs are dropped
into the boiling miso . When the eggs are
soft-boiled, they are ready to be served. |

Lightly seasoned Nanbu rice crackers are
put in a hot pot. When the rice crackers
have absorbed the flavor of the hot soup,
they are ready to be served. |
|
|
|
|
|
Aomori is surrounded by the sea on three
sides, and so has many fresh seafood delicacies
including scallops, squids, sea urchins,
abalones, flatfish, sea squirts and sea cucumbers. |

|
Jusan Lake and Ogawara Lake are famous for
their corbiculae. They add flavor to Shijimi-ramen,
Chinese noodles and Shijimijiru, soup.

|
|
|
Ichigoni is typical summer soup with sea
urchins and abalones. Ichigoni, which means
cooked strawberries, was so named because
sea urchins cooked in hot water look like
wild strawberries. |

Wheat is used as the main ingredient in these
special rice crackers. Their light flavor
is very popular. |
|
|
|
|
|
Aomori produces the most in Japan. There
are also many processed products such as
sliced dry garlic. |
|
|

|
|
There are many local brands of tasty sake
made from Aomori's delicious water and rice,
tempered by the bitter climate. |
