promenade of the Anmon Bridge. There are

| Five-storied pagoda at Saishoin |
|
|
The five-storied pagoda was erected in 1667
for the repose of those who died in the battle
to unify Tsugaru. The pagoda is 31.2 meters
in height and was constructed without the
use of nails. The beautiful pagoda has been
designated an important cultural property.

Mt. Iwaki is 1,625 meters above sea level
and is the highest mountain in Aomori Prefecture.
It is called "Tsugaru Fuji" because
of its beautiful shape extending from the
top to the bottom of the mountain. Mt. Iwaki
has been a religious mountain for the people
of Tsugaru for a long time. |

This was a temple for the retainers of the
Tsugaru feudal domain. Many parts of its
magnificent temple gate are characteristic
of the works of the early Edo period. The
temple has been designated as an important
cultural property.

Snow statues of various sizes and 200 snow
lanterns lined up in the shape of samurai
in combat take visitors to the world of fantasy
along with the flood lit castle. |

The middle of May is the best season to drive
along Apple Road where white apple blossoms
are at their best and viewed against a backdrop
of the snow capped Mt. Iwaki.

The garden, built in 1919, retains the flavor
of the Edo period. The upper part of the
garden with a commanding view of Mt. Iwaki

| Castle Hirosaki and cherry blossoms |
|
|
Five thousand cherry trees, most of which
are Yoshino cherry trees, look beautiful
against the backdrop of the white walls of
the old castle and ancient pine trees. The
cherry blossoms look exceptionally beautiful
when illuminated against the night sky.

The castle town of Hirosaki has an appearance
of serenity and calmness. Thirty-three Zen
temples stand quietly in Zenringai and one
can experience the atmosphere of this former
samurai town in the "Nakamachih district,
which houses a group of traditional buildings.

of samurai in combat are carried in procession.
This is the heroic and mysteriously elegant
fire festival.

|
About 3,000 traditional kokeshi dolls from
ten regions across the nation are on display
here. These Kokeshi dolls made of pure gold
and silver are famous. Craftsmen give demonstrations
on the making of kokeshi dolls and there
is also a workshop where you can experience
hand-painting the dolls.

Small wooden stores from the feudal domain
period stand along an arcade street several
hundred meters in length. There is no such

Seibien creates an individualistic atmosphere.
It has a dry landscape garden of 3,600 tsubo
and people enjoy strolling around it. The
garden was started in 1902 and it took nine
years to build. The garden is in harmony
with the Seibikan which is characteristic
of the buildings of the Rokumeikan period
with Japanese-style rooms on the first floor
and Western-style rooms on the second floor.

Dake Spa at the western foot of Mt. Iwaki
still retains the atmosphere of a bye-gone
age when people visited hot springs for medicinal

This is a historical spa that was used for
curing ailments in the Tsugaru feudal domain.
