Shariki Village is located in the northwestern part of Tsugaru Peninsula, facing Lake Jusan to the north and the Sea of Japan to the west. In 1889, when the government introduced the town and village system, 6 villages - the former villages of Shariki, Shitashariki, Ushigata, Shimoshigata, Toyotomi, and Tomiyachi - were amalgamated into a new village: Shariki. The population of the village is 6,500. The village has historically not been blessed in a geographical sense, as it is the site of the Byobuzan dunes as well as the wetlands formed by the back flow from Lake Jusan. Furthermore, it had been subject on occasion to the floodings of the Iwakigawa River and Yamadagawa River. Through the Lake Jusan national reclamation project, completed 20 years after its commencement in 1949, the land was converted into rice fields. The wide area of the Byobuzan dunes is utilized to enable cultivation of such products as Japanese radishes and shallots, distinguished brand-name products which are distributed to other areas of Japan. The village features many tourist attractions such as Shichiri-Nagahama Beach and Takayama Inari Jinja Shrine, both of which are designated as quasi-national parks of Tsugaru. At Takayama Jinja Shrine, a splendid view of the west coast from its modern observatory can be had. Memorial events and monuments ¥Universal love of human beings In October 1889, the Cheseborough, a 1,500 ton US sailing boat, was wrecked in a storm off the coast near Takayama Inari Jinja Shrine. To show the respect for the people who tried to rescue the crew with demonstrations of their courage and love of people in sacrificing their own lives, a monument was built in the village. ¥Byobuzan dunes crop field A field developed on the dunes by the national cultivation project of Byobuzan, with an area of 630 hectares. It is the largest field of its kind in Japan with facilities such as underground drains and sprinklers.
